Search engine optimization or SEO, is used to improve a website’s ranking in the search results in order to increase website traffic. This will lead to more sales and revenue if the site is one that converts easily. SEO can be achieved in two ways, with White Hat SEO or Black Hat SEO.
Thanks to Google updates, Black Hat techniques are a thing of the past, although some site owner is bound to create new techniques to temporarily outsmart search engines.
Black Hat and White Hat techniques are worlds apart, and if you plan to exist online for very long, you’re better off keeping your techniques clean. Since a lot of SEO is outsourced, you’ll also need to ensure that your consultant uses approved techniques only.
Here are 4 ways to implement White Hat SEO techniques on your blog or website.
#1. Use META Tags The Right Way
A Meta tag is simply a tag that contains information about your web page. A good Meta will contain your keywords and a description of the page. Don’t over-do the keywords and make sure that the description and keyword are truly relevant to the content on the page. Meta tags have a character limit of 155 characters which will be displayed in the search results, so make them count.
#2. Incorporate Relevant Keywords
Use the Google AdWords Keyword tool, if you must, to discover words that are relevant to your main keyword or phrase. List a few of them in the Meta tags, separating each one with a comma. Resist the temptation to string a host of keywords into one Meta tag. Studies have shown that 3-5 keywords are more effective.
Once you’ve included the keywords in your Meta tags, include them in as natural a way as possible in your page’s content. You can use them in the title, links, and in the first and last paragraphs. There is no reason to use them in every other sentence.
#3. Use Clear And Descriptive URLs
Site URLs that are closely related to the site’s theme are more successful than sites where no thought was given to the URL. If you’re opening a tire shop, for example, you’ll rank better in the search engines if you included tire shop in your domain name. Your page URL should also describe what the content on the page is all about. Incorporating your keywords into the URLs will help your rankings in the search engines.
#4. Build Quality Backlinks
Gone are the days when you can drop backlinks any and everywhere in order to rank your pages. Now, it more than just quantity, the quality of the backlinks matter even more than the number of backlinks that your site has. Focus on building quality backlinks in a natural and Google friendly way. You can do this via meaningful press releases, guest posts, social media, blog commenting and content marketing.
Over to you.
