Well ranking keywords depends on two main factors – overall quality of your site and effective link building campaign. Quality of a site is mostly determined by certain factors  like its average page rank, domain and page authority, age, content and links associated with it. If a website has a good PR, DA/PA and links, then it has got better chances to get ranked ahead then a site, which has poor PR and links.

That being said, the word ‘ranking’ is manipulative and illusive as well. Your website could be on the first result of Google for an irrelevant keyword, but you might not get any traffic from it because of its irrelevance and therefore, getting ranked for it will mean nothing for you. To get ranked for good and relevant keywords, you should first perform a proper keyword research and make a list of keywords that are relevant to your website and have moderate or less competition, so that it is easier for you to rank them.

Once you have a list of keywords with you, you should further shortlist 8-10 keywords, preferably long tail ones, with medium or low competition and then try to promote them in a planned way through link building. Link building can done through many ways, like guest blogging, article marketing , forum posting, blog commenting, directory submission etc. Try to include your keywords while link building process and slowly you will notice improved in the ranking of your website for these keywords.

Do install Google analytics as well to keep a track on traffic and keywords. Analytics will also show you keywords for which your site is receiving visitors and you might use this information in your link building campaign.
