If you have a small business in an industry that is highly competitive, then you might want to consider your options.  It is really important to compete without undercutting the competition.  Here are a few ideas that will help you out.

  • Flexibility – Make sure that your business plan has room for change. It is likely that you will have to make some changes along the way.  Your business plan should be adaptable at any time.  You might want to use flexibility to your advantage.  For instance, you can use new technologies as they come into play.  Businesses may be discussing these new technologies, but you can jump ahead of them and put them into practice right away.
  • Collaboration – Collaborating with other small businesses can help when it comes to competing with the big dogs. If there are large companies in your area, then you might have a time trying to compete with them.  Building strong networks and alliances with other small businesses may be one of your best moves.  Look for companies that are willing to work with you, and not against you.
  • Proximity – Small businesses will usually get to know their customers fairly well. Bigger companies may not be able to say that.  Taking care of your local customers and getting to know them better can provide you with a competitive edge that will be very helpful.  You can also use this close proximity with your customers to help ensure customer satisfaction by doing follow-ups.
  • Differences – When you look at your competition, you will want to take a look at the things that you can do differently to make your business stand out. There may be things that they don’t offer.  If you can offer your customers more, then chances are they will turn to you in their time of need.
  • Online Presence – Small businesses will usually have some sort of web presence, but is it enough? Focusing on making the most of your online presence is key when it comes to competing with other companies.  You will want to make the most of your resources, including social media marketing and other online communication.
  • Socialize – Be social with your customers. Offer them certain incentives when they do business with you.  You can get involved with your local social scene by becoming a part of charity works, advertising, sponsoring events, making donations, and doing various other things.

These are all great ways to boost your competitive edge.
