If you have an account on Tumblr for your business, then you are probably aware of the fact that there have been some issues on the site regarding security.  Tumblr is a popular social media site that was hacked recently.  More than 8,000 accounts were hacked and spammed.

This “worm”, so to speak, infected all of the accounts that viewed and shared their post.  Tumblr acknowledged this issue and worked quickly to resolve it.  It only took a couple of hours for it to be completely fixed.

You might feel like your page is not really prone to hackers, but more and more hackers are targeting the sites of small businesses.  While it may not always be possible for you to stay ahead of the game, there are some things that you can do to help keep your account more secure.

  1. Make Frequent Updates to Software and Other Plugins

Software updates can be a very good way to fix any bugs that may cause potential damage to your site.  You will want to check for updates and download them when they first come available.  Most sites out there will help you out by sending you an automatic notification when an updated version of your software has become available.

  1. Use Secure Passwords

You will not want to use simple passwords to protect your site.  While you will want to choose something that you can remember, you will also not want to make it something that will be easy for someone else to guess.

Experts recommend that you create passwords that are 14 characters long, or more.  They also recommend that you include upper case and lower case letters, along with numbers.  Random.org is a great place to turn when you have a problem coming up with your own secure passwords.

  1. Don’t Use Free Themes

Some people may be very tempted to use free themes for their sites, but this is something that should be avoided.  Sometimes, these files can have bugs and other files that can infect your site.  When you choose paid themes, you will usually have a lower risk of infection.  If you do decide to use free theme files, you definitely want to scan it ahead of time to ensure that they are risk free.

  1. Take Advantage of Google’s Tools

Google has free web analytics tools that can really help you out.  This tool can help to detect malware or infections within your site.  They will then give you a detailed report of the problem.  Along with the notification, they will also give you the steps that you need to take to fix the problem as quickly as you can.
